Frequently Asked Questions About Kids Martial Arts

What age can my child start martial arts?

Children can start martial arts at StandStrong Academy from age 4.

Our Infants programme is designed for children aged 4–6, Juniors for ages 7–10, and Youth for ages 11–15.

Each programme uses age-appropriate activities and coaching to help children develop confidence, coordination and practical self-defence skills.

Does my child need any previous martial arts experience?

Not at all! Most children who join StandStrong Academy have little or no previous martial arts experience.

Our coaches adapt activities to suit each child's age, confidence and ability, helping beginners feel welcome while giving more experienced children opportunities to develop.

There's no expectation for your child to know anything before their first class. They can learn at their own pace in a supportive environment.

Can martial arts help my child's confidence?

Yes! Martial arts can be a fantastic way for children to develop confidence, particularly when they're encouraged to try new things, overcome challenges and recognise their own progress.

At StandStrong Academy, we build confidence through achievable challenges, supportive coaching and opportunities to learn from mistakes.

We don't expect children to get everything right first time. We help them understand that confidence develops through practice, persistence and learning what they're capable of.

What will my child learn in your martial arts and self-defence classes?

Our kids martial arts and self-defence classes teach a combination of practical physical skills and personal safety awareness.

Children learn age-appropriate striking, defensive movements, wrestling and ground-based skills, alongside recognising potentially unsafe situations, setting boundaries and making confident decisions.

As children progress through our Infants, Juniors and Youth programmes, the training becomes more challenging and realistic, helping them develop their skills in a safe, supportive environment.

Our aim isn't just to teach children how to defend themselves physically, but to help them develop the awareness and confidence to avoid difficult situations wherever possible.

What should my child wear to their first martial arts class?

For their first martial arts class at StandStrong Academy, children should wear comfortable sports clothing that allows them to move freely, such as a T-shirt and shorts or leggings.

They'll train barefoot on our mats, so there's no need for special footwear.

You don't need to buy a uniform or martial arts equipment before your child's first trial. Our coaches will explain what they'll need as they get started.

Can parents watch their child's martial arts class?

Yes! Parents are welcome to watch their child's trial class at StandStrong Academy.

We know starting something new can feel daunting, so we encourage parents to stay and see how our classes work, meet the coaches and watch their child take part.

Once children become regular members, we generally ask parents not to watch the sessions. This helps children develop independence, build relationships with their coaches and training partners, and focus on their training.

Of course, we understand that some children need a little extra support when settling in, and we're always happy to discuss individual circumstances.
