As a parents ourselves, we know the worries you feel about your children.
Not long ago, my daughter came out of school quieter than usual, head down as she was walking away from school. She was rubbing her hands together.
As we got in the car, I asked her, “what’s up?”. “Oh, nothing”, she said. I knew she wasn’t telling the truth.
The silence continued for another 5 minutes. I could see the sadness in her eyes. I asked again but phrased the question slightly differently, “Did anything happen at school today, darling?”
The tears started to roll from her eyes. “Mummy, someone pushed me today, and I fell over.”
My heart felt heavy as she sat there – I could feel her pain. I asked her, “what did you do?”. “Nothing. I didn’t want to get in trouble,” was her reply.
I stopped the car, and talked. We talked about having the right to stand up for ourselves.
No one has the right to hurt us, and we have the right to stand up for ourselves.
We discussed using our voice and how it can help us stay safe, and the teachers were important in stopping the situation.
She understood that if it happened again, no matter what, mummy had her back.
Our classes are here to support your child. We have their backs. We are here to help them have the tools to stay safe and feel empowered even when they are away from your care.
● We teach them how to use their voice assertively when others are trying to hurt them
● How to deal with physical situations using schoolyard techniques
● We speak to them, so they understand and recognise bullying behaviour
